Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly resumed plenary on Monday with a resolution to write commendation letters to Northern governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for their collective decision that resulted in the victory of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu during the party’s recent convention.

President Muhammadu Buhari, Southern governors on the platform of the APC, the Conference of Speakers and the National Assembly are to also receive letters of appreciation from the Assembly. The House, which also resolved to send a congratulatory message to Tinubu, who the lawmakers called a ‘golden fish’, thanked the presidential aspirants who stepped down from the race and supported the former governor of Lagos state to victory.

This is as the members of the House further took turns to eulogise the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, who is known to have commenced the mobilisation for Tinubu long before the latter officially declared his intention. Recall that Speaker Obasa, since 2020, had visited many states of Nigeria canvassing for support for the emergence of Tinubu as APC flag bearer.

In his contribution, Obasa said the outcome of the primary election was worth celebrating, especially in relation to the number of people who supported and played various roles to ensure Tinubu’s victory. According to him, the action of the Northern governors has further deepened democracy and unity.

Ahead of the convention, the APC governors in the North had resolved to support a Southern aspirant. They also made their decision public.

“That singular action of the Northern governors is proof and testimony that Nigeria’s democracy has come to stay and that Nigeria will continue to exist as one. It goes beyond giving Asiwaju support and shows that in togetherness, we can take this country forward.

“The emergence of Asiwaju gives hope that there are better days ahead where we would have an egalitarian society.

“We have absolute confidence that just like he did it before, he can do it again,” the Speaker said as he recalled the various achievements recorded by Tinubu as governor of Lagos state. He tasked stakeholders and party leaders to intensify their support for Tinubu ahead of the general election.

On his part, a lawmaker, Abdulsubur Olayiwola, described Tinubu as a political warlord just as he argued that the presidential candidate’s Abeokuta declaration helped his victory. He also noted that Speaker Obasa started reaching out to Nigerians from other parts of the country even before it became public knowledge that Tinubu would run for the position.

While another lawmaker, Hon. Tobun Abiodun, confirmed that Obasa started the move even “things were still sketchy”, his colleague, Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu, said: “Nigeria as a nation just got lucky because by 2023, we are going to have a President who has the grace to move this country to greater heights.

“With a true democrat in the person of Asiwaju, a new Nigeria beckons.”

He described Obasa as a man with foresight for championing Tinubu’s cause. Also contributing, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, described Tinubu as a man whose time to lead the country has come. While commending Obasa, Agunbiade added: “We must go back to our constituencies and ensure that those who would vote for Asiwaju get their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs).

For Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, Tinubu reaped what he had sowed for many years with his victory at the convention.

CLO Kicks Against Closure of Lagos Estate Gate.

Published

on

The Civil Liberties Organization (CLO), a human rights group in Lagos, has expressed concerns over early closure of the entrance gate into Abel Orebiyi Street, off Salvation Road, in Opebi, Ikeja, Lagos State, against motorists, at 8:00pm daily.

CLO contended that such denies residents access through the gate, when there is no curfew or visible security threat, saying it is abuse of human right and personal liberty of the people.

Our investigation revealed that on closing the Abel Orebiyi Gate at 8:00pm, security guards direct motorists to use the gate of Ajanaku Street to get to their residence or destination.

Also, non-residents, including dispatch riders delivering courier services, are not allowed to enter the estate with their cars or motorbikes through Abel Orebiyi Street at any hour of the day. Guests who attended events in the estate were not excluded from the restrictions.

They are all directed by the security guards to go through Ajanaku Street, which is about 120 meters away.

There has been latent discontentment among source residents affected by the early disclosure of the entrance gate. There were, however, divided opinions.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, some residents asserted that the early closure of the gate is a security measure in the interest of all residents.

Some others argued that the timing is too early, and should be reviewed at 12 midnight, as in other places. They added that it is affecting their businesses, mostly the restriction of non-residents, though people trekking have access.

However, at the gate, there is a public notice that the “estate is strictly residential and commercial activities are not allowed.”

Meanwhile, the Head of Legal Unit at CLO in Lagos, Princewill Akpakpan, acknowledging that security is very important, emphasized that security measures must take into consideration the peculiarity of the environment and the interest of the people.

Akpakpan asserted that streets, like roads, are public space, not private. He contended that the public supersedes private concerns, noting that the restrictions would affect people’s business.

Akpakpan noted that Abel Orebiye Street and its environs is in Lagos metropolis, and is close to police formations around Ikeja, noting that rapid security responses are easily available in the metropolis.

He, therefore, declared that the closure of Abel Orebiye street gate at 8:00pm is a violation of the human rights and personal liberties of residents driving late.

Akpakpan pointed out that if residents of Ajanaku Street should close their gate at the same evening hours, how would car owners access Abel Orebiyi Street?

He advocated that the Residents association should be called into question, and that the police should order them to open the gate till 12 midnight.

Efforts to contact the resident’s association leadership were not successful at the time of this report.

Land Dispute: Harmony Gardens Theatens Legal Action On Awujale ,Epe Oba

Published

on

In an escalating legal saga, Harmony Gardens and Estate Development Ltd, has issued a pre-action notice to Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebu land, Ogun State, alongside Oba Kamarudeen Animashaun of Epe, Lagos State, and others. The notice serves as a stern warning against alleged continuous trespass, accusing the traditional rulers of using their influence with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to forcefully take over Harmony Gardens and Estate Development Ltd’s investment in Eyin-Osa Resettlement.

Harmony Gardens and its sister companies, prominent real estate entities, claim investments totaling billions of Naira in the Eyin-Osa, Yegunda, and Abomiti resettlement scheme. The pre-action notice levels accusations of criminal conversion and reselling 94 hectares of land against Oba Sikiru Adetona, Oba Kamarudeen Animashaun, and the Eyin-Osa Resettlement Committee. The notice suggests that the accused parties are presenting the rightful owner, who acquired the land from the Eyin Osa statutory owners, as a land-grabber.

The company emphasizes its legal right to the land, citing the possession of a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) with the number 33/33/2022. The pre-action notice alleges that the defendants are conspiring with the police hierarchy, specifically implicating IGP Egbetokun, to forcefully take over the land and detain the company director under the guise of ongoing investigations. The notice asserts that all related cases have already been investigated, charged to court, and some taken over by the Attorney General’s office.

Accusations against Oba Kamarudeen Animashaun and others include causing divisions by reselling the resettlement land, with claims that the Eyin-Osa Resettlement Committee, including Oba’s son, Idris Animashaun, is complicit in these actions. The notice alleges the committee has sold land to different real estate companies, creating conflicts among investors. It further claims that civil cases such as Awujale vs Iposun are being used to create confusion, with the Kakanfo to Awujale allegedly boasting of receiving $50,000 from Obembe real estate to bribe a judge, a case that does not involve Eyin Osa Government Resettlement Land.

Harmony Gardens vowed to resist any form of intimidation, threats, or manipulation and pledges to protect its investment through all legal means. The pre-action notice accuses Oba Sikiru Adetona of criminally converting and forcefully taking over parts of the company’s 94 hectares of land for resale, including 15 acres to Obembe Properties. The notice suggests an attempt to frame the managing director of Harmony Gardens, with the IGP deploying men of IRT under DC Sanusi to forcefully take over while the company MD was kept under the STS, allegedly hiding under investigating Dotun Hassan’s frivolous petitions.

The notice concludes by urging Oba Sikiru Adetona to use his royal duties to resolve the land dispute or face legal actions within the ambit of the law. Copies of the notice were sent to the Attorney General of Lagos, the Chairman of Eyin Osa Resettlement Committee, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Egbetokun.

As tensions rise, this legal battle promises to be a complex and protracted affair, with potential implications not only for the parties involved but also for the broader real estate landscape in the region. The coming days may shed light on how this dispute will unfold in the courts.
